What Is Nitrogen Gas?
Nitrogen is a gas that makes up roughly 79% of the air we breathe. It is a clean, dry, inert gas that is often used for creating or maintaining a controlled atmosphere. The many applications of Nitrogen gas include purging, sterilizing, packaging and bottling, tank blanketing, and corrosion prevention.
How is Nitrogen Gas Made?
As we mentioned earlier, Nitrogen exists in our atmosphere and "making" it is the process of separating the Nitrogen molecules from the other gases and storing them for use. South-Tek Systems engineers and manufactures Nitrogen Generator systems that mechanically filter out the other gases from the air, concentrating the N2 into a storage tank for process usage.
We use a PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) Technology where clean, dry compressed air enters one of the two adsorption vessels containing a carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Smaller oxygen and residual molecules (H2, He, ec) are absorbed into the CMS, allowing the larger nitrogen molecules to pass through into a storage tank for later use. Upon saturation, the first assorption vessel releases the oxygen while the second adsorption vessel starts the process over again.
We also use a simple Membrane Technology where compressed air is forced into a vessel containing a hollow tube in the middle surrounded by a polymeric hollow fiber. These hollow fibers selectively permeate oxygen, water vapor, and other impurities out of its side walls, allowing Nitrogen to flow through its center and emerge as product.
Where to Get Nitrogen Gas?
So now that we know more about what Nitrogen gas is and how it's "made," we're left with the question of where to get nitrogen gas. While some companies still rely on high pressure cylinders delivered by gas companies that need to be stored and switched out when empty, the more convenient, safe, and reliable option is to invest in a Nitrogen Generator to be installed at the point of process.
South-Tek Systems is a leading maker of Nitrogen Generating Systems. We design, build, and install nitrogen generators for a wide variety of applications worldwide.
